Being based in the Garment District is about to pay off big for Xin Song. Thanks to the Fashion Center Business Improvement District, five of her framed eight-foot-high art fixtures will be showcased along five blocks on Broadway from West 36th Street through West 41st Streets starting July 11. Each piece in her “Five Elements” exhibition features one side with a current photograph of the neighborhood combined with Chinese paper cutting and laminated onto tempered glass. The other side will be cut from solid black paper, creating a silhouette reminiscent of the wrought iron filigree elements found in historic New York City architecture.
Born and raised in China, Xin Song now lives in Brooklyn and works from her West 39th Street studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. Five Elements, which she described as “recognizing how the convergence of a community’s diverse cultures and shared history shape its distinct yet ever-evolving character,” will be on view through August.
